International criminal law has classified and punished the mass killings after the fall of Srebrenica as genocide. But so many more atrocities were committed between 1992 and 1995 that would not fall under this classification.
Based on the 11 phases of genocide, this work opens up a broader story of the genocide while transforming relevant fragments from the archive of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision into filet crocheted pieces. The horrors are not always immediately recognizable in the chosen images, but are deeply woven into the patterns. In Bosnian households, crocheted works are common as decorative objects. Like everyone you speak to there, they carry a story within them. These are being connected the city of her origins and invites others to contribute their own stories. The question remains how much of this was reported by the Dutch media then, and now? Take a step closer and listen.
